Vintage Vibe

October 31, 2009

There’s something about exploring antique stores. Just popped into one venue in the Dallas antiques district on Industrial Boulevard late this afternoon before closing, and walked away with nothing but inspiration! Here are some jewels taken from my iPhone:

How great would it be to have an open cupboard full of Fiesta? I have started my own collection, but nowhere near this fantastic!

Tinsel and Jesus

That time of year: a tinsel tree and the reason for the season!

I'm coveting these tassel-y, sparkly earbobs!

Gorgeous glass doorknobs. They make me want to buy a house just to remodel! It's the little things...

Bonjour, je m'apelle Monique.

There must have been dozens of these poor critters scattered around the antique store. Their little mouths are hinged into clips. Must research how these were worn back in the day. Sorry, little fellas.

Treasures inside the chest

Lots of antlers. It is Texas, after all.

Medals, medallions, pins, etc.

Hiya, dollface!

Spools and balls of yarn make me want to bust out the knitting needles. I know they're around here somewhere!

That does it. I’m going back earlier next week. There just simply wasn’t enough time to soak it all in! I’m also raring to shop my own closet in the coming days. I know there are buried treasures there too. Watch this space!

Girl on Top Does Dallas

October 30, 2009

Isn’t LOVE an amazing feeling? Your heart does somersaults. You’re thrilled and giddy and have so much energy. You look phenomenal (glow, even!), and your life just seems to sparkle.

How did you get there? Did it happen out of the blue, or did you spend a little time preparing yourself for this feeling? Did you read up a little on the subject (The Rules, Men are From Mars…, your astrology)? Get advice from friends? Did you look in the mirror to see how your butt looked in those jeans before you set out on that fateful day? Did you send a message to the universe?

And wouldn’t it be fantastic if all that delicious goodness could spill over into other areas of your life?

Like, say…work??

Girl on Top: Your Guide to Turning Dating Rules into Career Success

In Girl on Top, author and career expert Nicole Williams takes the dating rules we’ve all heard, read about, and probably put into action at some point, such as “Play Hard to Get”, “Don’t Bash Your Ex”, and “Don’t Waste the Pretty” (or in my case, try, try again!), and reveals how they can be applied to career strategies as well.

I love the idea of taking these straight-forward strategies and applying them to the business world. Why not? You don’t lay it all on the table on the first date, do you? If you don’t let your boyfriend/girlfriend walk all over you, why should you let your boss?

In addition to relationship-type advice, Nicole has fashion guidelines as well (because after all, looking good isn’t really optional, is it?). For this book tour, Nicole has teamed up with The Limited stores.

Last night I attended a book signing event at The Limited store in the Dallas Galleria, and I had the pleasure to meet not only Nicole (who was SO absolutely charming and personable that she walked right up to ME and introduced herself), but also Linda Heasley, President and CEO of The Limited, as well as Elliot Staples, Vice President of Design at The Limited!

What a perfect setting to showcase Fall/Winter 09 fashions and trends–to an audience who is interested in establishing, building and advancing in their careers!

Nicole and Elliot tag-teamed on stage, showing the audience how to create business-savvy looks that are appropriate not only for work but can transition to happy hour (or *wink* date) with the change of an accessory or simply removing a jacket.

Remember Forenza? The Limited has relaunched the brand. Here, Elliot demonstrates the Infinity Scarf.

With a couple of quick changes, it's time to leave the office behind. There's life beyond 9-5!

What a fun night! I had a great time sipping wine and dishing with Nicole and the Limited folks. Thanks so much for the tips on getting to the top.

Time to climb!

Dark Delights – Spooky Style

October 28, 2009

The time is fast approaching. It’s our annual night of party-hopping and candy-groping, and wouldn’t you know it? A virtual feast of dark treats and magical fashion suddenly appears right before our eyes! If you haven’t gotten your haunting ensemble pulled together yet, here are some images that might scare up some inspiration.

Lucky for us, the recent runways were full of dark fashion. Couture or costume? From zombies, vampires and ghostly spirits to a Gothic Alice in Wonderland, the looks were all represented:

Speaking of, while we’re anticipating the March 2010 release of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, we can also look forward to his retrospective at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. Love these spooky images from Harper’s Bazaar:

A Very Barberry Day!

October 26, 2009

According to Pantone’s Colorstrology, October is supposed to be calm and soothing. Cerulean is the color for this month.

October=Cerulean:  Peaceful, Poised, Balanced

But take a look at what’s in store for today! Yes, in a sea of chilly blues and serious blue-grays, my birthday pops up as Barberry! I love it!

October 26=Barberry: Powerful, Sexy, Intense

So, what does Barberry mean? In Colorstrology terms, this:

FLUENT and articulate, you can be a great speaker and leader of rights. You are not afraid to step up to the plate. Adversity will not claim you or stop you from creating and attaining your desires and aspirations. Resist the urge to allow power to intoxicate you. Use your strength as a tool to get the job done and to spread your words effectively. Wearing, meditating or surrounding yourself with Barberry helps integrate your intensity and commitment with clarity and ease.

With that, I’m going to try to surround myself with some Barberry fun today! Where to even begin?? Here are some thought-starters pulled from Pantone’s Fall 09 Color Report:

And some inspiration from Pantone’s Spring 2010 Fashion Color Report as well:

I agree with what Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color institute says about adding a pop of color:

Now more than ever, women are vigilant when it comes to spending. Instead of re-inventing their wardrobe at the start of each season, consumers want pieces to complement what they already own. Pairing a bold color with a basic piece or freshening up their look with bright accents addresses the need for practicality, as well as fun.

Enjoy your day–whatever the color!

Hey Babycakes!

October 22, 2009

My parents are coming to visit tomorrow. My mom and I are going to celebrate our birthdays together (her’s was yesterday and mine’s on Monday). So in honor of our *small groan* milestones, I made mini cupcakes!

Happy Birthday to Mom and me!

As I was finishing up and getting ready to sit down at my desk and check my email and maybe flip through some magazines, I picked up the November issue of Glamour and what did I spy? Scarlett Johansson, looking much like my sprinkled cupcakes in this darling Lanvin tee!

Cute, no? I also love the stacked and mismatched layers of bracelets. All that and she’s now a fellow redhead? Delicious!

Even more strange parallels? In the Glamour interview, when asked about possibly getting burnout at 30 because she’s so busy, Scarlett answers, “You never know. I might open my own bakery!”

Okay, I’m off to tear through these magazines and hope that I can control the urge to indulge in those sweets! Enjoy.
