Eye Want Sunshine!

October 14, 2009

Day 8,412 of non-stop fog, drizzle, downpour and overall cloudy malaise. What is going on here?

After a mild bout of the SADs, I’ve decided to try to shake this feeling with some positive wishful thinking. Especially after reading about the latest and greatest adventures of the fashion-influencing Olsen Twins, a foray into the world of sunglasses!

The duo announced yesterday that they are launching a line of eyewear for Spring 2010, starting with these four styles: (1) Vintage-inspired brow line rims [ed note: want!!], (2) Round shades a la 1960s folk singers, (3) Classic metal aviators, (4) Oversized [natch] squares.

All of the eyewear buzz got me thinking about sunny days ahead and what’s going on in the world of specs. After some research and playing around on one of my favorite websites, Polyvore, I’ve narrowed my findings down to these four big ideas:

1. Newtro — or New Retro. Basically the idea is to take inspiration from the past, but bring in new materials such as interesting metals, textures, and colors. This Ray-Ban Clubmaster poster illustrates the retro styling mixed with new color and texture:

These colorful Clubmaster styles are seen on the cast of Gossip Girl at a launch party in New York:

2. Where The Wild Things Are — the look is natural. The color palette and materials are earthy and inspired by the wild…animal prints, leathers, and neutral color combinations:

These leather-trimmed Chloe shades are fantastic!

Look how they fit right into this ethnic-inspired ensemble, including printed skirt, fringe-y jewelry, and wide leather belt.

Animal prints and tortoise shell sunglasses are a natural (pun intended) for this theme, too. Remember, when it comes to animal prints, a little goes a looooong way. They look great mixed with other interesting patterns as shown here.

These tortoise shell shades are a perfect complement to the embellished jewelry and mixed neutrals.

3. His and Hers — the look is masculine, but everyone can wear. A lot of today’s fashion styles are inspired from menswear, and accessories are no exception. This look is very much related to the Newtro theme above, as illustrated by these Wayfarer looks (I especially love the black and white frames!):

Take a bold approach and accent the look with metal and chains.

Or a boyfriend-y approach with a plaid boyfriend jacket, striped tee, and messenger bag.

4. Poetic — The idea here is soft and pretty and a bit romantic. Lighter, softer pastels work extremely well with the pale cosmetic colors we’ve seen on recent seasons’ runways. I love these Prada butterfly frames, and they work very well in two very distinct looks illustrated below:

Here’s a tailored look incorporating soft cosmetic color accented with black.

Here’s a more romantic look that infuses nudes with soft pinks, pretty prints, and detailed trims.

Have fun and be creative with these ideas. Who knows? Sunglasses can be your inspiration for a whole new look! Now, bring on the sunshine! I’m soooooo ready.
