A Very Barberry Day!

October 26, 2009

According to Pantone’s Colorstrology, October is supposed to be calm and soothing. Cerulean is the color for this month.

October=Cerulean:  Peaceful, Poised, Balanced

But take a look at what’s in store for today! Yes, in a sea of chilly blues and serious blue-grays, my birthday pops up as Barberry! I love it!

October 26=Barberry: Powerful, Sexy, Intense

So, what does Barberry mean? In Colorstrology terms, this:

FLUENT and articulate, you can be a great speaker and leader of rights. You are not afraid to step up to the plate. Adversity will not claim you or stop you from creating and attaining your desires and aspirations. Resist the urge to allow power to intoxicate you. Use your strength as a tool to get the job done and to spread your words effectively. Wearing, meditating or surrounding yourself with Barberry helps integrate your intensity and commitment with clarity and ease.

With that, I’m going to try to surround myself with some Barberry fun today! Where to even begin?? Here are some thought-starters pulled from Pantone’s Fall 09 Color Report:

And some inspiration from Pantone’s Spring 2010 Fashion Color Report as well:

I agree with what Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color institute says about adding a pop of color:

Now more than ever, women are vigilant when it comes to spending. Instead of re-inventing their wardrobe at the start of each season, consumers want pieces to complement what they already own. Pairing a bold color with a basic piece or freshening up their look with bright accents addresses the need for practicality, as well as fun.

Enjoy your day–whatever the color!

Trompin’ in the Rain!

October 3, 2009

This weekend’s Austin City Limits Music Festival, marks the official close of the year’s summer fests. The fall rains are upon us (and those at ACL as well…hellooooo wet concert goers!), but that obviously doesn’t mean our dancing days are over:

No need for damp moods. Fall weather brings us some of the greatest things: falling leaves, hot coffee, dancing in the rain, and of course, fashionable rain gear! And what’s the best way to facilitate an impromptu Texas Two-Step or Rumba in the rain? The proper footwear, of course! As we transition from soft breezes to blustery near-freezes, here are some thoughts on how to keep your spirits stylish and your tootsies warm, dry and fantastically fashionable.

Pop Rock

Probably the best known waterproof boot today is the Hunter Wellington. These all-weather rain boots now come in every color of the rainbow and are handmade from a single piece of latex so they are truly watertight. Love these red glossies!

See how much festival goers love (and usually need) their Wellies? So much so that Hunter Boots has actually made a limited edition festival lace-up boot with rivet and buckle detail (see below):

Soft and Mellow

Here’s a version from Australian boot maker, Uggs. I like this update of the good ol’ celeb staple. They have the same cozy sheepskin lining as the regular soft Uggs, plus the protection of waterproof rubber on the outside. Splash on!

Heavy Metal

Check out Burberry’s metal chain detail. Chains and other metallic finishes such as studding are a trendy update to all fashion accessories:

So see? Rainy weather shouldn’t make you sing the blues–unless you want to! Fall rocks, rain or shine!

Black and White and Shades Between.

September 29, 2009

If you’re anything like me, the first hint of a nip in the air means breaking out the boots and scarves and deep, dark colors…even if the temps rise to 80 during the day. But seriously. How do you manage those cool, early Autumn mornings that turn into blistering dog day afternoons?

One way is to balance the heavy darks with brighter lights. In it’s truest form, contrasting black and white. It’s not only chic, it can be fun and easy on the eye as well as the budget. Many of these pieces will carry you from Fall through Winter and back into Spring! We are currently scouring the Spring 2010 runways, and see a bold black/white statement as a lasting trend.

Here are a few examples of current black and white mixes on the runway AND on the street:

[Styling tip: remember to wear white on the parts of your body that you want to emphasize and highlight, and let black be your camouflage!]

And while black generally takes top billing for Fall, the shades and shadows between black and white certainly come into play. Which brings us to probably my favorite non-color for Fall this year: Gray. I adore wearing gray. And no matter your coloring you can wear it! Here’s a snippet from Alternative Apparel on the virtues of wearing gray:

How to Wear it

First, ditch your thoughts of the doom and gloom associated with the color. Grey is simple, elegant, and flattering on pretty much everyone. Just be sure to consider your hair color and skin tone when picking the perfect grey. (Hint: those with warmer skin and hair are stunning in silver and pearl grey, while fair-skinned and flaxen beauties look lovely in charcoal and slate.)

For a lengthening, streamlined effect, try a head-to-toe monochromatic grey ensemble, and add a pop of color with chunky statement jewelry—long layered necklaces will stand out beautifully and glam up your look. Or, mix things up a bit and pair grey skinny pants, cords or menswear trousers with a vibrant sweater or top. Grey goes with every color, so you can’t go wrong.

Some options for going gray:

Options galore! Mix black and white and shades of gray (plus a few bursts of color, if you like), and you’ll have a foolproof wardrobe season after season…regardless of the temps!
