Black and White and Shades Between.

September 29, 2009

If you’re anything like me, the first hint of a nip in the air means breaking out the boots and scarves and deep, dark colors…even if the temps rise to 80 during the day. But seriously. How do you manage those cool, early Autumn mornings that turn into blistering dog day afternoons?

One way is to balance the heavy darks with brighter lights. In it’s truest form, contrasting black and white. It’s not only chic, it can be fun and easy on the eye as well as the budget. Many of these pieces will carry you from Fall through Winter and back into Spring! We are currently scouring the Spring 2010 runways, and see a bold black/white statement as a lasting trend.

Here are a few examples of current black and white mixes on the runway AND on the street:

[Styling tip: remember to wear white on the parts of your body that you want to emphasize and highlight, and let black be your camouflage!]

And while black generally takes top billing for Fall, the shades and shadows between black and white certainly come into play. Which brings us to probably my favorite non-color for Fall this year: Gray. I adore wearing gray. And no matter your coloring you can wear it! Here’s a snippet from Alternative Apparel on the virtues of wearing gray:

How to Wear it

First, ditch your thoughts of the doom and gloom associated with the color. Grey is simple, elegant, and flattering on pretty much everyone. Just be sure to consider your hair color and skin tone when picking the perfect grey. (Hint: those with warmer skin and hair are stunning in silver and pearl grey, while fair-skinned and flaxen beauties look lovely in charcoal and slate.)

For a lengthening, streamlined effect, try a head-to-toe monochromatic grey ensemble, and add a pop of color with chunky statement jewelry—long layered necklaces will stand out beautifully and glam up your look. Or, mix things up a bit and pair grey skinny pants, cords or menswear trousers with a vibrant sweater or top. Grey goes with every color, so you can’t go wrong.

Some options for going gray:

Sensational Stripes!

September 27, 2009

My Facebook status today read, “…going on a Fall Fashion Field trip!”

Guess where I ended up?

Brown and white and stripes all over!

Brown and white and stripes all over!

That’s right! The land of Brown and White Stripes, none other than the brand-spanking (and sparkling!) new Henri Bendel, at Northpark Center. Oh Dallas, what a fashion accessory fantasy land!

At first, I was surprised by the smallish space. From the outside, this Bendel looked like a closet compared to the dreamy and luscious 5th Avenue store in New York. Quickly looping the store, I felt a little thrill to be walking through the glimmering baubles and buttery handbags, but I kept wondering if this would be enough to satisfy style hunters in the land of bigger and BIGGER.

But a closer look was allllllll it took to realize that yes, this HB has got enough of the perfect signature pieces with all of the notable details (rivets, studs, charms!) to satisfy just about everyone–gift-givers to gossip girls!

Oh, and just in case you might the former, they’ve created a Perfect 10 list (and I can vouch for most of these…LOVE!):

P.S. I found out that they still have several of the giveaway totes left. Spend $125, get a cute canvas shopping bag (for more shiny things, of course!).
